Kimberly Kennedy, the Associate Concertmaster for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) visited Detroit’s Yessian Music to record “The Freedom” in honor of Yessian’s An Armenian Trilogy.

Those familiar with Kennedy, who has played since age 5, likely relate to Yessian’s emotions listening to her play. Classical music aficionados will have heard her perform at DSO, a prestigious position she earned in 1998 at just 22.

“I’m here to raise awareness about An Armenian Trilogy, a suite of music written by Yessian in commemoration of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide,” Kennedy said.

His journey led him to compose a 22-minute symphonic tribute honoring over 1.5 million Armenians slaughtered in a 1915 genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire.

Yessian composed the symphonic tribute, “To give voice to those who had theirs taken away,” he said. “Now through this music, I had a chance to step back and chronicle my heritage.”
